Confucius
Kong Qiu, or Master Kong, popularly known as Confucius, is said to have remarked that “success depends upon previous preparation, and without such preparation, there is sure to be failure." The Rehoboth Chinese restaurant, Confucius apparently lives by these words, having engaged in enough food study and preparation to remain in local business for more than two decades. Statistically, Chinese restaurants are not as frequent in beach resort towns, likely because the cuisine does not align with typical vacation food desires, where lighter seafood-focused restaurants dot the dining landscape. But each resort town needs its Chinese food fix, and Confucius has proven itself prepared for the challenge. Open Thursday through Monday only from 5:00 – 9:00, Confucius occupies a surprisingly narrow position in Rehoboth Beach: the only non-strip mall, sit-down Chinese restaurant in town. Standard Chinese staples abound, all cooked authentically (but American style), especially Peking Duck, Crispy Halibut, Cumin Beef, and Salt & Pepper (everything) dishes. Big city Chinese cuisine-eating veterans will find Confucius average, but for Delmarva, it is about as authentic as any other local competitor, slipping in Singapore-style dishes as well, rendering Confucius a quasi-Asian fusion option. Beware the menu prices, especially when utilizing its popular take-out service, as diners sometimes are not prepared for a bill more steep than they are accustomed to from their local home strip mall Chinese restaurant. Still, when Chinese food is what you crave, there are not a lot of Delmarva beach options, and Confucius more than meets the moment.
